Introduction

This book contains the diary of George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901), a Canadian Presbyterian missionary, educator, and medical practitioner. It covers the years he spent in Taiwan during 1871 to 1901. It is an important source for mapping the missionary history and the recent development in Taiwan. Except his personal life, Mackay also wrote about his experiences regarding historical events such as the Sino-French in 1885 and the cession of Taiwan to Japan in 1895.
