Introduction

This is the first book illustrating activities of the Taiwanese in Southeast Asia during Taiwan’s Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). It comprises 6 chapters and 420 thousand Chinese characters in total. Under the backdrop of the Japanese southward advance and colonialism of Western powers, this book explores the history of how the Taiwanese, who were in the midst of competition and conflict between imperialist powers, and deeply involved in historical entanglement of China and Japan, sought development in various places across Southeast Asia, including today’s Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines.
