Introduction

This oral history interview of Mrs. Chen Tso-tso contains a first-hand account of experience at Taihoku Prefectural Taihoku First Girl’s High School (now Taipei First Girl’s High School) during Japanese Colonial Taiwan. The school did not admit Taiwanese students until 1922. Born in 1927, Mrs. Chen became one of the six Taiwanese students admitted in 1941 and graduated in 1945. She later worked as a librarian in National Taiwan University for 7 years before getting married and relocating to Tainan. In the interview, she also gave her observations on differences of life in northern and southern Taiwan. In 1963, she became a Japanese teacher at YMCA and continue to teach after she moved back to Taipei with her family in 1979. She remained a Japanese teacher in her 90s until the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
