This book explores the history of Taiwan during the early modern period (16th- 18th centuries), under the backdrop of the history of East Asia and South East Asia. It shows the diversity and richness of Taiwan history through three themes: (1) Dutch historical materials and indigenous history study, (2) historical toponymy and food products, (3) folk tales and oceanic religion. The author emphasizes on the continuity and structural aspects in history, refraining from dynastic historical narratives. He reiterates his hypothesis of “the cultural field of Holo people” and argues for the importance of classical historiography in the study of East Asian maritime history and Taiwan history.
