Abstract：
The Great Matzu Temple of Tainan, a Grade I historical monument, was built more than three hundred years ago during the Ming-Zheng era. For various reasons, related information and literature remains limited and scarce. Moreover, along with the social changes in different periods, the names and functions of these ancient buildings also varied in connection with the then historical events. Passed down through legends and folklores, such names and functions were constantly recreated. Hence, the architectural characteristics and functions of these historical buildings became hybrids of reality and imagination; and their actual existence or authenticity became questionable. In the light of traditional architectural theories and principles, this paper compares the contemporary recognized names and functions of these ancient buildings against related literature and historical materials. Whether there exist other possible names and functions is further explored for more in-depth analysis and for reconstructing the actual reality.

Abstract：
Through tracing the emergence of pig trade in north Taiwan in the late 19th century, this article examines the importance of pigs and pork in the agricultural production and daily consumption of Han people in Taiwan; and more importantly, investigates the influence of the opening up of the port trade on the economy and living standard of local people in late-Qing Taiwan. This article shows that the production and consumption of pig had been flourishing in Qing Taiwan. Pig husbandry was the most popular household sideline, and its considerable commercial value made it an important business at that time. Factors accounting for the popularity of pig husbandry included the low cost of raising pigs for peasant households, the high commodification of pigs, and the contribution of pig rearing to rice cultivation. Another major reason is the Han’s preference for pork. Not only was pork consumed a lot in daily diet of Han Taiwanese, it was also used at banquets and religious worships as well as sent as gifts. Despite the widespread production and consumption of pig on the island, north Taiwan also had swine imports from Fujian and Zhejiang between 1880 and 1900. This article argues that the emergence of pig trade was an important feature of the transformation of economy after the opening of ports in north Taiwan. On one hand, pork prices rocketed because of inflation; on the other hand, after the opening of ports, north Taiwan has become the political center, leading to restructure of its local agricultural production. While domestic pig husbandry decreased, the demand for pork increased as a result of rising local consumption with better financial conditions. In sum, this article shows that the development of commercial economy in north Taiwan in the late nineteenth century resulted in distinctive changes in the economy and daily life consumption of Taiwanese people.

Abstract：
Between 1920s and 1930s, East Asia saw extensive scholarly discussion on Social History Debate. During the same era, there was an influx of Western modern social theories including liberalism, anarchism, and Marxism, thus contributing to a climate of influential Social History Debate. Among these social theories, Marxist ideology had the most profound impact on the modern concept of knowledge and imagination among Taiwanese intellectuals. Different theoretical concepts on Taiwan and China’s economic history were developed and different opposing programs of social revolution and social reform were formulated. Since the late 1980s, democratization led to freedom of speech and discussion. Hence, Taiwanese scholars on literary history and political history re-examined the essence of the Debate and its impact on Taiwan history, and used it as a weapon to get involved in Taiwan’s political and social issues at that time. Of note is the significant change in knowledge on Taiwan and China’s socio-economic history among socio-economic historians since the 1990s and the total transformation of socialist movements and ideas in western societies and Japan. Nevertheless, the analysis of Social History Debate by Taiwanese scholars was still made on basis of prior and outdated knowledge, making these analyses fragmented and far from complete. This paper re-examines the historical features of the Debate and its meaning in Taiwan history in the light of new knowledge on Taiwan and China’s socio-economic history and global socialist history.

Abstract：
Immunological diseases, like allergic rhinitis, asthma and autoimmune disease, are irritating modern ailments in our modern society, and immunology provides the authoritative knowledge regarding how to deal or cope with these new medical conditions. Instead of studying the history of immunology in Taiwan as a natural consequence of advancement in biomedicine, this article situates immunology, the then new medical specialty, within the specific historical context and describes the historical agents that contributed to the establishment of immunology as a specialty in Taiwan. According to the primary materials collected from Witness Seminar, medical journals, and archive from the Chinese Society of Immunology, this article analyzes the resources and mechanisms behind the development and specialization of biomedicine in post-war Taiwan. The following interrelated questions are raised and discussed. First, what were the local context and social resources that enabled the institution of a new medical specialty (immunology)? Second, how did the new specialty build up its own resources and research topics, and negotiate a new boundary with the existing specialties (like bacteriology and microbiology)? Third, how and why specific historical actors of various existing specialties could work together to construct this new specialty? Finally, what was the relationship of this new specialty with local political and academic environment in post-war Taiwan, a developing country that eagerly absorbed advanced medical knowledge and system from Euro-American countries? This article argues that, while the development of immunology in Taiwan corresponds with the general specialization and institutionalization of immunology in the global context, local research networks, disease conditions and political environment also contributed significantly to the foundation of this new specialty, especially the medical aids and the political fights between Taiwan and P.R.C. in various international scientific unions in the 1970s. Moreover, it was boundary objects like “self-recognition” and immunological measurement techniques that made it possible for actors with different disciplines and purposes to work together and establish the immunological specialty in Taiwan.

Abstract：
The past two decades witnessed rapid development in historical geographic information system (GIS) and significant changes in its applications. Of note is that applications of historical GIS are no longer restricted to large-scale projects or collaborations; hence, individual investigators can easily apply historical GIS for their own research. Among various disciplines of Taiwan historical research, regional history, as a study which unfolds history in the context of regional analysis, seems to be one that can realize most the values of historical GIS. As a review of the applications of historical GIS to Taiwan regional history studies in the past 20 years, this paper comprises three parts. First, it discusses how GIS is applied in three key themes of regional history studies. The second part details how GIS can be used as a tool to deal with different regional historical materials. Finally, it explores the construction of Web-GIS based infrastructure, such as THCTS (Taiwan History and Culture in Time and Space), examining the role it plays in regional history studies.
