Introduction
This book contains a diary written in 1904 by a Japanese soldier stationed in Tainan, a city in southern Taiwan. Besides his daily life and recreation, the diary’s author also recorded weather, news events, transmitted diseases, earthquake, and festivals at that time. Since he talked to the locals with simple Taiwanese and the names of people and locations in the diary were all pronounced in Taiwanese, the translator, who acquired the diary in a Tokyo used bookstore, translated the diary into Taiwanese, to better reflect the atmosphere of the time.
