Introduction
This diary offers a fresh perspective on the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Incident of 1925 in central Taiwan, a pivotal precursor of Taiwan’s farmers’ movement. The author, Liu Song-fu (1898-1971), served as a board member of the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers’ Union. He was among 93 individuals arrested in October 1925, with 39 later charged, for their involvement in an incident stemming from an ongoing dispute over sugarcane purchase prices between farmers and a sugar manufacturing company. Liu documents his experiences and reflections both during his detention and after his release in July 1926. The diary covers entries dated from January to December of 1926.
