Abstract：
In the contemporary ethnic classification of the indigenous peoples in Taiwan, the Plain Indigenous peoples in today’s Chiayi and Yunlin are categorized as “Hoanya.” However, this ethnic name did not appear until the 1930s and was proposed by Japanese linguist Ogawa Naoyoshi with reference to an unpublished manuscript of early anthropologist Inō Kanori. As seen in his handwriting, Inō wrote g like y; hence, transcribers or compositors might have misread Inō’s Hoanga as Hoanya and by chance invented this ethnic name. If Hoanya is merely an unintentional invention, one must further ask how the indigenous peoples were classified under Dutch and Qing rule. This study found that both Dutch and Qing classification systems agree with each other, showing consistency in the ethnic names used from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century. These systems classified indigenous peoples not only according to their languages but also the interactions between ethnic groups. On the basis of Dutch and Qing records, this study further argued that indigenous peoples had long been engaged in interactions despite language differences. Hence, caution should be taken not to confine their interactions by linguistic and other boundaries defined by later anthropologists or scholars. It is essential to delve into historical sources to reconstruct the history of the indigenous peoples.

Abstract：
This article discusses the making of 16 newly discovered drafts of war paintings collected in Harvard-Yenching Library. The paintings were drafted by Fuk’anggan in Taiwan under Qianlong Emperor’s edicts for producing paintings to publicize Qing’s greatness. Comparative analysis was made between the painting drafts and their final versions; and their similarities and differences were examined. This article argues that the painters imagined and made the drawings from the Taiwan-urban-centered perspectives by exploring the images of aborigines in Taiwan to realize the context of the paintings.

Abstract：
Modern recreational hunting was introduced to Taiwan by Westerners after the opening of treaty ports in the middle of the late Qing Dynasty. The local upper class also gradually participated in this activity. It evolved through three time periods: late Qing Dynasty, Japanese rule, and postwar era. Apart from the history of deerskin trade in Dutch Colonial Taiwan (1624-1662), past research on hunting history in Taiwan focused mainly on issues related to hunting rights and hunting culture of aboriginals in modern society. The rich and diverse historical experience of modern recreational hunting was largely overlooked. The main historical materials used in this article on recreational hunting in modern Taiwan include diaries, court archives, periodicals, and media reports. Changes in official hunting regulations and hunter groups are explored. The origin, practice, and end of recreational hunting are examined to understand the development of animal views, environmental ethics, and ecological conservation in modern Taiwan.

Abstract：
This paper discussed the 1918 lawsuit filed by Lin Sung-shou of Banqiao against his mother. First, the reason why Lin hired Ichiro Hatoyama from Japan to represent him in this lawsuit was examined. Then how the dispute between Lin and his mother was resolved was analyzed. Finally, why Hatoyama and Lin ended up turning against each other was explored. It was found that the Government-General of Taiwan was not pleased with the dispute between Lin and his mother. Thanks to the mediation by Kojuro Nakagawa, the then vice chairman of Bank of Taiwan, the dispute was eventually resolved. However, Lin failed to pay Hatoyama the legal fee he promised in due course. Hatoyama thus sued Lin and won all three court instances. In the then social leading class, the Lin family was the most iconic and highly valued by the colonial government, their family dispute aroused much concern from the top authorities. Although the lawsuit involved custody of property, which was relatively simple compared with fierce fight for property distribution, the concern shown by the authority was indicative of political interference in family affairs. The analysis shed light not only on the intricate relationships in the Lin family, but also on the political maneuvers of the Government-General of Taiwan. Nakagawa’s mediation was involved in the successive lawsuits, signifying attention and intervention from the top authorities. In-depth examination of these legal disputes of the Lin family offered a better understanding of the judicial history of the social leading class in the Taiwanese society.

Abstract：
The Espionage Group of the Taiwan Provincial Security Command was previously an espionage organization affiliated to the Investigation Office of the Taiwan Provincial Garrison Command in the post-war period. Following the dissolution of the Investigation Office in January 1947, the Espionage Group was moved to the Second Office of the Taiwan Garrison Command, and it was still under the command of the Security Bureau during the 228 Incident. After the 228 Incident, the Taiwan Garrison Command was reorganized into the All-Taiwan Provincial Garrison Command, with Peng Meng-chi serving as the commanding general for a long time and with the Security Bureau gradually losing its control role. This article attempts to analyze the reasons and effects of the above changes over time. Following its establishment in September 1949, the Taiwan Provincial Security Command was a full-featured intelligence agency compared with the Secrecy Bureau and the Bureau of Investigation of the Ministry of the Interior. The Espionage Group was under the Security Office. There were more than ten regional espionage teams distributed over counties and cities in Taiwan, espionage teams with special missions including postal inspection, culture and education inspection, and public security, as well as espionage teams based in Hong Kong, Japan and overseas. Investigation methods used by the Espionage Group involved mainly setting up insiders to collect intelligence and running new agencies as cover. Arrests and other operations were mostly carried out in cooperation with the local police. In addition to summarizing the different teams, pseudonyms, distribution, and members of the Espionage Group under the Taiwan Provincial Security Command, this article also explains the characteristics of its work during the anti-espionage period in the 1950s, as well as possible cooperation or competition with other intelligence agencies.

Abstract：
Between 2018 and 2019, there are 186 related studies on historical figures of Taiwan. These studies are grouped under 14 categories: early period, Japanese invasion of Taiwan, politics, economy, cross-border travelers, social leaders and local elites, females, aborigines, religions, academic purposes, writers, arts, sports, and family history. Among them, there are more studies on arts, writers, politics, cross-border travelers and academic purposes. Several studies involve in-depth exploration of events and records related to significant figures, giving a more comprehensive portrayal or a complete reversal of previous depiction. In addition, many researchers nowadays use innovative research approaches, such as digital humanities, and diverse viewpoints for historical interpretation, including longitudinal study and observation of Taiwan from a Japanese perspective. These ideas and methods can be inspirations for future researchers. Regarding research trends, there have been fruitful studies on artistic and literary figures, signifying progress in cultural research. The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Taiwan Literature have gathered materials for compiling biographies of famous artists and writers, respectively, and a series of books on them have been published. Research on cross-border travelers has also gained immense popularity, showing that the academic focus is no longer limited to local Taiwanese citizens but includes also overseas Taiwanese and foreigners in Taiwan. An overall review of related papers on historical figures of Taiwan from 2018 to 2019 shed light on research trends in the studies of Taiwan history. The use of historical materials, research methods and perspectives in many papers can serve as useful references for future studies.
