Introduction

This Chinese-English bilingual volume is a compilation of Taiwan-related historic materials selected from the James Wheeler Davidson Family Fonds housed at the University of Calgary in Canada. James Wheeler Davidson (1872-1933), the author of The Island of Formosa, Past and Present, first arrived in Taiwan in 1895 and spent the next decade there and in other areas of East Asia. He witnessed the rise and fall of the Republic of Formosa and accompanied Japanese forces as they took control of Taiwan.
